Bears look to bounce back

By Kevin Braysher

Essential Coffee Burleigh Bears coach Jim Lenihan is confident in the club’s depth as they look to bounce back against Souths Logan Magpies this Sunday.

The Bears have been dealt a handful of blows at the judiciary in recent weeks and went down narrowly to the Blackhawks in Townsville last Sunday.

But with a handful of Titans expected to become available this weekend and a plethora of talented players waiting in the wings, Lenihan is confident his team can handle any obstacles and bounce back to winning form.

“We have really good depth at the moment, which is a real blessing for the club,” Lenihan said.

“It doesn’t matter how many players we have out. If we have 17 under 18 players, we expect them to do really well at Queensland Cup level.

“We have a couple of suspensions of late, but we can cover those blokes easily and we’ll have some Titans players back as well, so hopefully we’ll put a really good 17 together and put in a good performance against Souths.”

With Sami Sauiluma and Pat Politoni both gone for the next three games, there will be opportunities for other players to make their mark.

Josh Berkers came into the centres last weekend and made 113 running metres and 3 tackle breaks in a strong performance, while this weekend Jordan Scott has been named to make his Bears debut at hooker in place of Politoni.

They take on a Souths Logan Magpies side who will be fired up after a tight loss to Redcliffe last weekend.

The Magpies will field a powerful forward pack and despite suffering three loses from their four appearances so far this year, they pose a big threat to the Bears this weekend.

“We need to put (last weekend) behind us and just focus on Souths Logan,” Bears fullback Kurtis Rowe said.

“I’m expecting a tough game. Unfortunately, they fell just short last weekend by one point and I’m sure they’re going to come out firing.”

The Essential Coffee Burleigh Bears will travel to Davies Park this Sunday to take on the Souths Logan Magpies. Kick-off is at 3pm and the game will be livestreamed on BearsTV.

Meninga Cup and Colts are also at Davies Park Sunday, with kick-offs at 11.50am and 1.20pm respectively.

The local Gold Coast teams and the SEQW side meanwhile are all at home on Sunday, with 20s at 11am, reserve grade at 12.30pm, A Grade at 2pm and the women’s game from 3.45pm.
