The Burleigh Bears can guarantee their place in the 2019 SEQW Division 1 finals series if they can claim victory against the ladder leading Wests Brisbane Panthers on Sunday at Pizzey Park.
Two crucial wins over Toowoomba and Tweed Heads has steadied the ship for the third placed Bears, who can mathematically ensure their finals place with another win this week.
Thanks to a guaranteed three points coming from their Round 14 bye, a win on Sunday would mean the Bears will finish the season on at least 33 competition points, which would put them out of reach of the fifth placed Souths Logan Magpies.
A loss to the Panthers, however, would make it difficult for them to reel in the second placed Easts Tigers with just three rounds left in the regular season.
Sunday’s clash with the Panthers is a big test for the defending champs, with Wests setting the standard in the Division 1 competition all year.
They have lost just one game all season and have the competition’s best attacking record and second-best defence.
A win over the competition leaders would be a statement of intent as the Bears continue their quest for a fifth consecutive premiership.
