The Essential Coffee Burleigh Bears will look to secure their first win in PNG when they take on the Hunters this Sunday afternoon.
The Bears and Hunters have met on PNG soil on five occasions, with the Hunters securing victory on every occasion so far.
Not only is it an important game for the Bears in their race to the finals, it will be a milestone for winger Troy Leo who plays his 50th Intrust Super Cup game.
Leo made his debut for the Bears in 2017 and has gone on to score 43 tries in his 49 appearances so far, including 19 tries from 19 appearances in 2019.
He leads the competition for tries and line-breaks and scored a double last time the Bears travelled to PNG, including a length-of-the-field contender for try-of-the-year.
Halfback Jamal Fogarty also has a milestone in sight, needing 13 more points to go past 800 career Intrust Super Cup points.
With 162 points for the season, Fogarty is currently third all-time for Burleigh points-scorers, with Reggie Cressbrook still holding the record with 964.
Both Leo and Fogarty were named in an unchanged 17 on Tuesday for what shapes as a crucial game for the Bears.
Only four games remain in the regular season and after last week’s narrow loss to Redcliffe the Bears have slipped to third place on the competition ladder.
Another loss would likely see them drop to fourth and put their chances of finishing in the top-two in serious jeopardy, while a win would keep them in the hunt and almost certainly lock in a top-four finish.
Their opposition have struggled in 2019, winning just three games and currently sitting in 13th place.
Earlier in the year the Bears posted a 56-4 thumping at Pizzey Park, but the Hunters are generally a different proposition at home.
