A spot in the 2019 Intrust Super Cup preliminary finals is on the line when the Essential Coffee Burleigh Bears take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls this Sunday.
With 17 wins from 23 regular season games the Bears finished in third place and will travel to BMD Kougari Oval this Sunday to battle the second-placed Seagulls.
The top four finish means a win this week would entitle the Bears to a preliminary final at Pizzey Park in two weeks’ time, while a loss would give the Bears a home elimination final next weekend.
These sides have only met once this season, with the Bears claiming a 26-18 win at Pizzey Park back in Round 6.
That day Kurtis Rowe was one of the stars – contributing 154 running metres, 6 tackle breaks, 2-line breaks, a try assist and a try.
Rowe had been missing from the Bears line-up due to injury in Rounds 20-22 but made his return to the side last week in Burleigh’s 30-12 win over the Capras in Rockhampton.
His impact was immediate with the reliable fullback running for a team-high 145 metres as well as notching a line break, a try assist and a try of his own.
The 2016 Bears player of the year has been named at the back once again for this week’s semi-final against Wynnum, with Sami Sauiluma also set to return from a one-week suspension.
Sauiluma’s return sees Dylan Phythian shift to the bench in an otherwise unchanged team.
They face an in-form Wynnum who have won five of their last six games including a 30-6 win over the Norths Devils last weekend.
