The program, based at the home of the Burleigh Bears in Miami, provides players in their final 2-years of school the essential skills and knowledge to excel both on and off the field, while offering a clear pathway to employment in the sports industry.

The expanded program will offer students the opportunity to study a Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching with a specialisation in rugby league. This hands-on curriculum equips students with the essential tools needed to pursue success in the sporting arena and beyond. By focusing on sport coaching, participants gain valuable insights into team dynamics, strategy development, player management, and other crucial aspects of the game.

Students commencing in year 10 or 11 will have the chance to attend the program one day a week at Miami over the course of two years in place of a regular school day. Students can earn up to 8 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits and contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), by completing the two-year program. Successful graduates will be considered job-ready and receive accreditation under the NRL framework to coach and officiate at a foundation level.

Damian Driscoll, CEO of Burleigh Heads RLFC said “this partnership allows the club to promote sustainable pathways for the next generation of coaches, volunteers, officials and administrators to grow the game of rugby league, while supporting educational outcomes for players within the Gold Coast region. We are proud to be aligned with TAFE Queensland in delivering this program.”

Jesse O’Hara from TAFE Queensland stated “Working with the Burleigh Bears to launch this program in 2024 will provide passionate rugby league players a unique experience where they can learn within a dedicated rugby league environment alongside players from the region, providing opportunities to work in the sports industry and beyond.”
