Burleigh Bears will put their unbeaten start to the 2026 BMD Premiership season on the line when they travel north to face Northern Pride at Barlow Park on Saturday.

The Bears have been the competition’s benchmark through the opening rounds, but the trip to Cairns represents another significant test for a side that has already shown an impressive ability to find a way to win.

Northern Pride, meanwhile, will be determined to produce a statement performance in front of their home supporters after a mixed opening to their campaign.

Burleigh are on the back of a huge win in round eight over Wynnum Manly and will be looking to keep that momentum going.

The super impressive stat was the Bears 12-line breaks against Wynnum and keeping Wynnum to zero.

To go with that the Bears only missed 10 tackles.

The Pride will also be encouraged by their home-ground advantage. Barlow Park has already produced some entertaining football this season, including their nine-try performance against Ipswich.

What to expect

Expect a physical opening with both teams looking to establish dominance through the middle. Burleigh’s unbeaten record will give them confidence, but Northern Pride have demonstrated enough attacking firepower to make this a genuine danger game for the ladder leaders.

The Bears’ ability to maintain possession and withstand periods of pressure could be crucial. If they can control field position and force the Pride to defend for extended periods, their depth and patience should eventually create opportunities.

For Northern Pride, the formula is simple: start fast, win the middle and make the most of their opportunities.
